We have discovered over the past decade that our pets demonstrate their pain in much more subtle ways than we realized, and that they have been suffering in silence for years. This sobering realization has caused an explosion in research into the understanding of pain and effective ways to recognize and treat pain in out patients. The staff of Village Animal Hospital practice comprehensive pain management for the comfort and well-being of the patients. Current approaches focus on anticipation and prevention of pain, as well as both pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic management techniques. Untreated pain decreases quality of life for pets and owners, and prolongs recovery from surgery, injury, and illness. Our veterinary team plays an essential role in educating pet owners about recognizing and managing pain in their pets.
